HOW TO DANCE LIKE A CHAMPION

HOW TO DANCE LIKE A CHAMPION

The most valuable things in life can only be learned by doing them a lot. You can read every book on Ghandi and still not be a leader. You can read cookbooks cover to cover and still not be able to serve up a gourmet meal. You can watch every belly dance video on youtube and still not be able to shimmy! If you want to get better at something there’s no magic ingredient - it’s about drilling the basics again and again until it becomes automatic.

Maybe you’ve been coming to class regularly but you feel frustrated that after practising for hours you’re not getting better or getting the results you want? Then it’s time to think about whether you’re practising in the right way!

Champions are brilliant at the basics
— American basketball player John Wooden

Mastery in nearly any endeavor is the result of deeply understanding simple ideas. For most of us, the answer to becoming better leaders, better chefs or better dancers is consistently practicing the fundamentals, not brilliantly understanding the details. You can find more ideas and tips on how to practise here.

ESRAA WARDA // FROM MOROCCAN CHAABI TO ALGERIAN CHAOUI

esraa warda Zürich chaabi dance

We're very excited to be hosting a series of North African dance workshops over the weekend of October 27/28th 2018 with Esraa Warda, a North African performance and teaching artist originally from Algeria.

Having grown up between Brooklyn and Algeria, she was introduced to dance within informal women's spaces and weddings and was quickly acknowledged as a talented dancer within her community and family. She now professionally teaches and performs Moroccan Chaabi and other Algerian dances such as Rai, Chaoui, Kabyle, and Allaoui. Her dance style and teaching methods are non-commercial and focused on the "transmission" of body knowledge mirroring the same way she learned - through informal women's dance circles. Her dance principles focus on legacy and cultural preservation that we should leave behind dance artistry that is valuable to the transformation and evolution of culture.

Read Esraa’s article about North African dance and rhythms here.

HOW TO REMEMBER A CHOREOGRAPHY!

You might not believe it but being able to pick up a choreography fast is something you can train and get better at. Here's a few tips you can try in KP6 - with regular use we promise that you'll be able to pick up the choreography faster AND without trying as hard!

TIP 1: DIVIDE THE CHOREOGRAPHY INTO CHUNKS!

Most dance pieces have distinct sections. Divide your dance into these sections and work on one section at a time. It’s easier to remember three short sections than one long dance. Learn one section until you know it well, then move on to the next. You don't necessarily have to learn the sections in order. If there's one section that seems pretty easy and something you can learn quickly, do that one first. Just make sure you eventually put all of the sections together in sequential order.

TIP 2: CONNECT CERTAIN MOVES TO THE MUSIC!

If there are strong beats in the music, or a section of melody that sticks out, you can use them to help you learn the choreography. Connect the movements to the cues in the music.

TIP 3: PRACTISE THE CHOREOGRAPHY IN YOUR HEAD!

Even if you’re somewhere that you can’t actually practice the choreography, run through it in your head. Run through the choreography, in the correct order, at times that you’re calm and relaxed. You can do this before bed or first thing when you wake up.
