MAKING TIME TO DANCE = SELF CARE!

We’ve all heard the analogy of the oxygen mask in the airplane as applied to ‘self care’. If you don’t put on your mask first, you can’t help others. If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t care for others.

Self-care – sometimes referred to as holding space for yourself – comes in many different forms. The point is that these activities refresh and energise, provide us with emotional and creative outlets and, in the end, satisfy our needs first.

After we’ve taken care of the basics (good nutrition, enough sleep, physical activity) our creative outlets such as dancing can energise us and form part of our self care routine. Read on to find out how to incorporate dance into your self care routine and some of the benefits you’ll enjoy by making dance a regular habit.

When I dance I feel at my most whole, at my most “me”. I'm learning to accept the imperfections, the mistakes, to accept myself as I am. When do you feel most at ease with yourself? How do you feel when you dance?

If you feel awkward or insecure you’re not alone. It can take a lot of courage to try something new or learn a new skill, knowing you’ll mistakes which will be reflected back to you in the mirror or seen by your teacher or fellow students. Here are some ideas to think about to help you feel more comfortable with yourself in or out of the dance studio.

To feel good in your own skin is truly a gift and it’s this gift that I want to share with as many women as possible through their participation in dance performance projects. This is also the gift that dance can provide by sharing the way we experience the world, providing a means to communicate beyond language and time.
